Elinor Guggenheimer was born to organize. A visionary for her time, she was at the forefront of efforts to improve the lives of children, women, consumers and senior citizens. No challenge was too great; each was met with an enduring organization. This year we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Women's Forum of New York, organized by Elly to create a critical mass of women of achievement who occupied leading positions, such as the "old boys'" network that existed for men. Elly also instigated and encouraged the formation of like Forums throughout the country, and then the world.
Today, 64 autonomous Women's Forums are affiliated with each other through the International Women's Forum, also founded by Elly and her colleagues in 1979. The Forum draws its invitational membership from leaders in business, the arts and professions, education, government and the nonprofit world. It is traditionally nonpartisan, but has raised its voice on matters of concern to women and men. A new generation of Forum leaders has reached out to mature women who have overcome adversity and hardship to pursue an undergraduate degree through The Education Fund of the Women's Forum. Elly would be proud of women supporting women.
